Halloween is right around the corner, which means that it’s time to start planning costumes, buying candy, and filling your house with spooky decorations. This year, have fun with the decorating and completely turn your home into a haunted house! It’s easier than you think, and most decorations have a DIY option which won’t break the bank.
To make it easy on you, we rounded up eight haunted house necessities that will ensure that yours is the scariest on the block.
1. Create a cemetery.
A cemetery is a great way to set the stage for your haunted house, and it’s easy to create your own! To make your own DIY tombstones, all you’ll need is foam, a knife, and some paint. But if you’re not interested in crafting, you can always buy them online. No matter which tombstones you use, scattering them in your front yard is sure to add an eerie feeling to your house.
2. Hang up ghosts.
Ghosts are a staple for giving your house a Halloween flair, and anyone can make them. You can create one out of an old bed sheet or a gauzier material, a balloon or Styrofoam ball, and some string to hang it with. You can find a great tutorial

3. Make a scare crow.
Scare crows are meant to scare off birds, but they can work on people too! It may take a little time, but you can make your own with old clothes, newspapers, and a broom or some wood. Top it all off with a scary mask or a pumpkin head to make it spooky!
4. Scatter evil eyes around.
There’s something scary about the idea that people are watching you, so placing eyes around the outside of your house is a great extra touch to your Halloween decor. You can easily craft your own glowing eyes with toilet paper rolls and glow sticks, or you could buy some light up ones to attach to your trees. Either way, the evil eyes will be sure to send a shiver down trick-or-treater’s spines.
5. Put “bloody” hand prints in the windows.
Placing bloody hand prints on your windows is downright scary and will take your haunted house to the next level. Just like the other décor ideas, you can easily make them yourself or purchase them. And they double as indoor and outdoor decorations!
6. Add some spider webs.
Hanging fake spider webs around your house and yard is super easy but leaves a huge impact. It makes everything look a little more haunted!
7. Invest in a fog machine.
Adding a fog machine will set the mood for your haunted house. It will create a creepy atmosphere and pull the whole house together.
8. Play sound effects.
Scary sounds complete a haunted house. You can find some on YouTube and play them from a speaker for a terrifically terrifying soundtrack.
