Being from a smaller town with not a lot of things to do, I love being only an hour away from Kansas City, which is filled with so many fun things to do.
Though there are always indoor options, there’s something magical about ice skating outside in the winter. The Crown Center Ice Terrace is open from November through mid-March and is one of the city’s most celebrated traditions. Plus, you can get two-for-one admission on Tuesdays after 5 p.m.
After going skating, you’re probably going to be hungry and since you’re in KC, I have to recommend BBQ, of course! Two of my favorites are Q39 (get the burnt ends, trust me) and Joe’s Kansas City (the gas station location on W 47th is a MUST – even Anthony Bourdain said so). If you are not feeling up for barbeque, then you have to give Rye at the Plaza a try!
To round out your day, there are tons of things to do in KC no matter where your interests lie. Recently opened, Maya: The Exhibit at Union Station features nearly Mayan 300 artifacts primarily dated from 200 through 900 AD. Most objects have never traveled to North America so you do not want to miss this!
If you are feeling competitive with your friends or family, then you definitely need to head over to Game Show Battle Rooms in Overland Park. And lastly, no trip to KC is complete without a visit to the 18th & Vine District, Kansas City’s historic jazz district with live music clubs and the Negro League Baseball Museum.
No matter where you go or what you do, I hope that you enjoy Kansas City and all of its offerings as much as I do.
