The Complexity of Simplicity

In February, I had the opportunity to participate on the Strategic Issues Work Group of the National Association of Realtors® Association Executives Committee.  The purpose of this Work Group is to create a report on future trends in the real estate industry.  Our report, entitled Simplify, was released to the membership at the NAR Mid-Year meetings last week.

You can read the report in its entirety here: Simplify9.pdf

It was fascinating being part of this small group.  We interviewed a host of industry and non-industry leaders all of whom brought unique and interesting perspectives on their vision for the future.  As the Report's title indicates, a theme from most of these leaders is that the world is getting more complex every day and with that complexity, there is a corresponding need for simplicity.  I concur.

Whether it is a real estate agent working with a buyer or seller, a broker working with an affiliated agent, an MLS working with a subcriber or an association working with a member, the "customer" in all of these relationships many times just wants life to be easy.  Simple.  Yet the task of delivering simplicity in our world today is in itself a very complicated one.

It forces all of us to seek clarity about what our "customers" want and need and deliver that with precision.  At the same time, we must constantly analyze the changes that the world delivers because wants and needs today may be very different tomorrow.   Relevance today does not guarantee relevance tomorrow.

I believe your customers need you today more than ever just like I believe the real estate industry needs a strong association today more than ever.  Curious that our complicated world provides the ultimate opportunity to deliver value to those whom we serve.

Simple?  No.  Complex...but I wouldn't have it any other way!

Your CEO,

Russ Cofano
