Columbia, Missouri – Missouri REALTORS® is pleased to announce Sundy Whiteside of Chesterfield, Mo., has been named the 2021 Missouri Good Neighbor Award recipient. This announcement took place at the Missouri REALTORS® Winter Business Conference on Friday, January 21.
Given annually since 2011, the Missouri Good Neighbor Award recognizes a Missouri REALTOR® who is dedicated to volunteer service. Each year, this recipient receives a $2,500 check for his or her designated charity. This year, however, Whiteside received a check for $5,000 in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Good Neighbor Award.
Serving as board president for the St. Louis Association of Community Organizations (SLACO), Sundy has been the creator and driving force behind numerous initiatives focused on strengthening neighborhoods and improving the quality of life for St. Louis residents. “I’ve always had a passion for helping people in need,” said Whiteside. “I’ve always been one to side with the underdog.”
Through SLACO, Whiteside created Keep it Clean (KIC), a neighborhood beautification campaign and youth employment project, increased SLACO’s visibility by helping mediate Community Agreements between neighborhood groups and developers and served as an organizer and petitioner for Proposition Neighborhood Stabilization (Prop NS), a $40 million bond issuance designed to stabilize LRA (Land Reutilization Authority) owned buildings. Today, Prop NS is a fully functioning city program available to all city residents.
Inspired by dilapidation and disinvestment in her community, Whiteside also co-founded and currently serves as the co-chair of the St. Louis Vacancy Collaborative, a coalition dedicated to reducing the number of vacant properties and the negative impact of vacant properties within the city of St. Louis. “A good neighbor is concerned about the welfare of all neighbors,” Whiteside continued. “The baseline of human existence is the care, the concern, and the commonality that we have.”
