We're active in the community serving on school boards, in elected positions and volunteering our time to make communities where we work a better place to be. We're educators – serving on panels and facilitating industry discussions. The philanthropic efforts of our members are inspiring and the difference they are making within their communities is significant. Our Member Spotlight series highlights these efforts and introduces some of our wonderful members.

This month, we are shining the Member Spotlight on Julie Dumsky.

In October 2011, Julie Dumsky, REALTOR® with Chartwell Realty in Lee’s Summit, felt led to meet a need in her community by making and delivering sandwiches to a Kansas City homeless shelter. After the third week, she noticed how appreciative the recipients were and decided to start Just a Sandwich, which provides weekly sandwiches to three shelters. Julie’s passion for helping alleviate hunger within the homeless population stems from personal experience, making the cause even closer to her heart.

As the heart of Just a Sandwich, Julie works tirelessly to organize supplies, volunteer teams, deliveries and donations. Her work is hands-on, making sandwiches, training volunteers and delivering when needed. She believes a good PB&J is more than “just a sandwich,” for not only the people receiving, but also the volunteers making the sandwiches. Just a Sandwich has provided a sense of community among the volunteers, providing a simple service opportunity with a big impact. Volunteers distribute 234 sandwiches each week, including uplifting scripture on address labels.

Julie was a 2016 Missouri REALTOR® Good Neighbor Award nominee.

If you’re in the spotlight in your community or know someone who is – let us know. We’d love to shine our Missouri REALTORS® Spotlight on you!
