Any addition to your family can change the dynamic, but especially so if it is a puppy. Getting your home ready for a new pup is an exciting time, and making sure you have adequately prepared for its arrival makes it even better. We have outlined a few things you can do to help make the transition great, and welcome the new arrival into your home.

Designated Space for the Puppy to Sleep:
Where the puppy sleeps is a personal decision. Some prefer to have the puppy sleep in a crate while others let it sleep in their bed. If you choose to have it sleep in the crate or a designated room, such as the laundry room, set up the area for the dog. This could include its bed, food and water, along with all of its supplies. The designated space can help the dog feel settled, knowing it's for him.

Housetraining:

Housetraining your dog can take time and accidents are bound to happen. If you have nice rugs, you may want to consider rolling them up and only using them on special occasions during this time. Having carpet cleaner close by will definitely help with the mess.

Installing a Fence:
If your dog wants to run around outside on its own, make sure you have a secure fence installed. Without a secure fence, the dog can runaway and wonder into other yards. Also, make sure the latch is high enough so the dog cannot accidentally unlock it.

Setting Boundaries:

Are there certain areas of your home that you don't want your dog to go into? If so, you may want to consider installing an electric fence or baby gate. This would block off the restricted area, preventing the puppy from entering.

Locking Up Chemicals:
Cleaning supplies sometimes contain poisonous chemicals to dogs. Dogs can easily open cabinets and knock over these products. Locking up these products ensures the health and safety of your dog.

Electrical Cables:
Puppies chew anything and everything within their reach. Removing wires or placing them in a high area can help prevent the puppy from chewing on them and possibly electrocuting themselves. Also make sure all sharp objects have been picked up off the floor.

Getting a puppy is an exciting time for everyone, and following these tips can help make the transition a success – and help keep your home intact. If you have a puppy or recently got a new dog, what tips would you recommend?
