The Top 5 Must-Haves for Your Dream Home

If you could design the home of your dreams, what would it look like?  While everyone has their own unique taste and style, there are several common themes that reflect the latest home trends. This year is all about the modern, open floor plan with a bright, airy vibe.

1.
       A modern kitchen

Modern or farmhouse kitchens take the lead this year, with many homeowners opting for statement vein marble and wood accents. Hidden appliances are also becoming more desirable as they make a kitchen appear more streamlined and less cluttered. And, long gone are the days of sticking to stainless steel; homeowners today are opting for mixing hardware finishes such as gold, copper, and pewter, resulting in a more eclectic space.

Don’t have an open kitchen?  Check out these 10 tips to make your small kitchen feel larger.

2.       Open floor plans

It’s hard to ignore the popularity of open-concept living if you watch HGTV remodeling shows. Designers are always looking for ways to knock down walls and combine rooms to make living spaces appear larger and more open. While some critics say the open floor plans are on their way out of style, several believe their functionality will keep them popular.  According to
Houzz, 51 percent of new kitchens open to other homes in the house and 20 percent open to the outdoors, proving open floor plans are still popular.

Not interested in a major home renovation? Try these tips to give your home a more open feel.

3.       Great outdoor space

What’s a dream home without the perfect outdoor space?  An outdoor patio or deck is an ideal way to extend your living space without undergoing a large home addition. According to Mike McGrew, treasurer of the National Association of REALTORS®, outdoor spaces are quickly becoming one of the most coveted home features in today’s housing market. Also, according to Houzz, the most popular backyard additions are patios, barbeque grills, and fire pits. Based on Houzz’s landscaping survey, 83 percent of homeowners are investing in backyard decks or patios for entertaining.

4.       Inviting entryways

Homeowners are more invested than ever in creating an entryway that makes an impact.  Whether it be vibrant wallpaper, a statement mirror or a grand staircase, homeowners want their entryway to make a strong first impression. No matter the size of the home, every foyer should reflect the homeowner’s personal style and set the tone for the rest of the home.

Not ready to renovate? Give your entryway a quick face-lift by adding a modern mirror in the hallway to brighten up the room. Mixed metals and curved lines are both on-trend and will instantly update your home.

5.       A shower with a view

Forget the standalone tub. Today, more homeowners are pining after glass showers – specifically with a picture window to create breathtaking views. Houzz reports that “showers that feel outdoor” are the biggest bathroom trend of the year. “To get around the weather dilemma, designers and homeowners are looking to intimate courtyards and strategic site placement to create bathrooms that connect deeply to the outdoors while still maintaining privacy,” explains
Houzz’s Mitchell Parker

Not keen on installing a floor-to-ceiling window in your shower? Opt for tranquil, nature-related décor through plants or a color scheme instead. And for a quick and easy bathroom update, simply replace old faucets and hardware for a more modern touch.
