2020 REALTORS® Conference & Expo Highlights | NAR Board of Directors Special Report

Missouri REALTORS®,

The 2020 REALTORS® Conference & Expo recently concluded and Missouri REALTORS® have a lot to be proud of! With thousands of REALTORS® throughout the nation participating in virtual meetings, activities and more, NAR’s Conference & Expo is the nation’s largest real estate event attended by top real estate professionals. The theme for this year’s event was ‘Find Your R’ with key topics being Renew, Restore, and Revive! Throughout the event, several Missouri REALTORS® were recognized for their contributions to the real estate industry. NAR also made history with REALTORS® commitment to Fair Housing.

Congratulations to these Missouri REALTORS®:

T. David Rogers | 2020 Missouri REALTOR® of the Year Recipient
T. David, along with all other 2020 State REALTOR® of the Year recipients, was recognized during the conference. This prestigious award is given to a member who exemplifies dedication to the National Association of REALTOR’S® Code of Ethics, efforts to encourage good real estate practices among other real estate brokers, volunteer work and business accomplishments.

Linda K. Brown | 2020 Good Neighbor Award Recipient
Linda was recently named one of five National Association of REALTORS® 2020 Good Neighbor Award recipients for her work with Eden Village; a village of tiny homes that provide permanent housing and a community to the chronically homeless. As part of this achievement, Linda’s charity received $10,000. Learn more about Linda’s story by visiting: magazine.realtor/LindaBrown

NAR’s Board of Directors met on Friday, November 13. There, they took historic action to strengthen REALTORS®’ commitment to Fair Housing. Directors approved recommendations to:

  • Extend the application of Article 10 of the Code of Ethics through the addition of a new Standard of Practice prohibiting the use of harassing speech, hate speech, epithets, or slurs against the protected classes.
  • Amend professional standards policy, expanding the applicability of the Code of Ethics to all of a REALTOR®’s activities.
  • Add guidance to the Code of Ethics and Arbitration Manual to help professional standards hearing panels apply the new Standard of Practice.
  • Revise the NAR Bylaws, expanding the definition of “public trust” to include all discrimination against the protected classes under Article 10 along with all fraud.
  • Continue the requirement for associations to share with the state real estate licensing authority final ethics decisions holding REALTORS® in violation of the Code of Ethics in instances involving real estate-related activities and transactions where there is reason to believe the public trust may have been violated.
Additional topics included new MLS rules, Core Standards changes, federal policy issues and vetting officer candidates. Visit the Board of Directors' Special Report to learn more about all of the issues addressed at the Board of Directors meeting.

Finally, NAR is launching FAIRHAVEN. Through this new program, you can use your fair housing knowledge to navigate challenging real estate scenarios. Fairhaven is a fictional town and does not represent or simulate a specific neighborhood, town, organization, or place. It is estimated to take 60-100 minutes to complete.

Sincerely,
John M. Sebree
